Let the buyer beware
Those are the four most important words you need to understand before you buy any R.O. (Reverse Osmosis) system.

When you purchase any R.O. system, be sure you are dealing with a reputable dealer or reseller. Ask the single most important question about water purification you will ever ask for your health and well being: “Does the system remove all fluorine and fluoride compounds or chemicals?” Of special concern are the Fluorine ion, hydrogen fluoride, any residual fluoride compounds, any fluorosilicate (fluorosilicates are hydrofluorosilicic acid [or any of its many synonyms] and sodium hexafluorosillicate [or any of its many synonyms]) that might be in the water as well as sodium fluoride and any other fluoride compounds or chemicals resulting from artificial water fluoridation or the treatment of the water supply with a fluoridation chemical added after the water is processed and treated for making it drinkable.

For your health and well being, you need to verify which ones are present in your water supply before asking that question so that you may inform the seller or manufacturer which fluoride chemicals you are dealing with. That means that you must get your water tested for the presence of all possible fluoride chemicals. You can get your water tested through the OGWA (Ontario Ground Water Association), web site http://www.ogwa.ca/.

The following list is not an endorsement of any supplier or manufacturer, but just a list that you can consult and follow up with to inquire about their product offering. Find out the name of the actual manufacturer so you may go to the source to get answers to your questions.

Remember that a salesman makes his living from the sales he makes and “may” not care about the quality of the product that he sells you or it's ability to remove the most noxious substances that you are concerned with: the fluorine and its many possible chemical compounds.

In spite of contrary recommendations from medical practitioners: allopaths, homeopaths and naturopaths, informed by even my limited knowledge of bio-chemistry, by my acquired knowledge from reading and research, by logic and wisdom, this webmaster continues to recommend and advocate drinking distilled water as the purest and healthiest form of water you can drink. If you have any doubts about its purity, you can be sure that it's the purest form of water you can drink and if you doubt its ability to assuage your thirst, you can be sure that it will look after your thirst. To those who disagree with my recommendation, and whatever objection they may bring, I ask one simple question: prove it.

Leaching of minerals from your body remains a controversial subject that requires in vivo research to confirm its many theories and opinions. In vitro experiments have clearly shown cellular extraction of essential minerals in cell grown petrie dishes. But that is not the criteria for deciding that distilled water or any substance can cause harm to your health. It is only an indicator of what might happen if any substance actually gets to the cells in your body intact. That is highly unlikely even if it is injected directly into your blood, where it most likely affects only the blood, with possible cascading effects that depend on the severity of the body's reaction to the invading substance. That's where it gets complicated.

The only way that distilled water or any substance may possibly get direct access to cells inside your body is by subdural injection, without using the bloodstream as a transport system. Even then, the body has defence systems that come into play that identify the substance as foreign and will react according to the perceived severity of the invading substance.

Our bodies are NOT petrie dishes, but complex organisms that have shown time and again their immense resilience and adaptabilty that prevent their complete breakdown until they have reached their maximum adaptability and pushed the limits of resilience beyond which they can adapt. When those limits are reached, depending on nutritional antecedants, individual adaptabilty and resilience, different people will develop different illnesses or disease states. The less the variety and quantity of toxic substances one has ingested and have remained in the body, the less severe the diseases will be when the body has had enough and begins showing signs of deterioration and becomes diseased.

I trust the late Dr. John Yiamouyiannis, PhD, Biochemistry in support of my assertions. In his book, Fluoride The Aging Factor, Chapter 12, he states:
A home water distiller provides the most reliable way to remove fluoride from the water in the home. The water from this unit should be used for drinking and for the preparation of all foods in the home. An alternate solution is to have distilled water delivered to the home [or purchased from a reliable retailer]. While spring water may also be used, care must be taken to be sure the spring water has a fluoride concentration of two-tenths (0.2) parts per million or less. Some spring waters are notoriously high in fluoride.

For those who are concerned that distilled water lacks minerals and that it may deplete the body of its minerals, it should be stressed that water is not a reliable source for minerals. In some cases, water may contain high magnesium/low calcium; in other areas it may contain low magnesium/high calcium or low magnesium/low calcium/high sodium or high arsenic/high fluoride/low magnesium. In order to receive a proper amount and balance of minerals, one must rely on a diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and other natural products. These foods are the result of plants which have pre-selected those minerals which are necessary for the maintenance of life to the point where the plant has been able to produce the vegetation and (or) fruit which we eat.

When purchasing foods, care must be taken to avoid beverages such as soft drinks, beers and wines, juice drinks and fruit juices from concentrate, etc. that have been bottled in fluoridated areas.

The good Dr. originally spoke those words in 1983 and they remain valid even today.
A document called North Island Labs, January 2008, on fluoride use, incorrectly reassures everyone that:
“Its known health benefits of reducing cavities at low concentrations have led to the practice of fluoridation of public water supplies.”
and
“Studies have shown that children drinking fluoridated water can expect to have up to 35% less tooth decay than those drinking non-fluoridated water.”

These kinds of fraudulent statement are next to criminal in light of current knowledge on the impact of swallowing fluoride chemicals found in food, water, beverages, toothpaste, mouthwashes, mouth rinses, pharmaceutical drugs and other products.

Repeated exposure to fluoride chemicals will cause

  1. dental fluorosis starting in childhood,
  2. tooth discoloration ranging from white spots
  3. dark brown stains,
  4. pitting of teeth,
  5. crystallized, brittle teeth that will break under pressure from eating hard foods.
NOTE on chronic exposure: The chronic (long term) exposure to fluoride chemicals will cause dental fluorosis and brittle teeth syndrome in most children if exposed before 8 years of age, and may cause skeletal fluorosis, joint pain, restriction of mobility, an increase in the risk of fractures and an increase in the incidence and severity of various degenerative health conditions depending on individual biological resilience and adaptability to the effects of fluoride chemicals.

The brittle teeth syndrome has been known to occur in adults after more than 25 years exposure to fluoridated chemicals and there are clear indications that it may contribute to endentuloussness (complete loss of all teeth).

The same document also makes the following assertions:
♦ Distillation - removes 100% of the fluoride.
♦ Reverse osmosis - removes 65% - 95%.
♦ Charcoal or carbon filters containing activated alumina may remove more than 80%.
♦ De-fluoridation filters - usually expensive and can require frequent replacement & maintenance.
The effectiveness of these systems is affected by factors such as cleanliness of filters and available water pressure. These systems also require regular maintenance to ensure that they are performing at their optimal level. The effectiveness of multi- & single media filters is variable dependent upon the type and manufacturer’s specifications. It is important to check that you are installing a filtration system that has SCC or NSF certification as being capable of removing fluoride specifically.

For a comprehensive listing of R.O Systems, just do a Google search using the following search words: "reverse osmosis systems" Canada +home -industrial.
Limit the search in this way, more Canadian results will show up than U.S., and you'll get mostly home distillation systems. Just work through the list.

The top result you'll get is this one: http://cmhc-schl.gc.ca/en/co/maho/wawa/wawa_001.cfm. Read it at your risk and peril. You could be lulled into a false sense of security and peace of mind. Like most government blah blah, it supports the status quo on fluoridation, making assurances about Canadian municipal water quality. Most of us that are aware of the water situation just "know it aint so" and look to better quality water than is available from municipal water suppliers.

Home Water Filter Systems for Drinking and Cooking

First comment: Caveat emptor : Let the buyer beware.

As in Reverse Osmosis systems, most sellers and manufacturers of these systems are in this business to make money, with little interest in your health and well being. It's in the nature of capitalism to do this. Businessmen see an opportunity to make money and they seize upon it to do so with whatever is the best idea they can identify to do just that. So forewarned is forarmed. Don't be fooled by great marketing messages with testimonials and great claims for helping with this or that ailment. Get their claims in writing and ask for the science behind the claims. No science, no buying.

AquaLiv – Naturally perfect water right from your tap! There is no scientific data provided for their claims of benefit.

Bone Char (Burnt Charcoal-Like Bone Calcium) water filtration

Bone Char filters are reputed to remove approximatley 99% of the Fluoride ion from water.

How well such a filtering system does its job depends on the type and amount of total dissolved and suspended solids in the water being filtered, the temperature of the water as it enters the bone char filtration column, the size of the bone char column, the water pressure and the rate of flow of the water.

Acquiring and Drinking Distilled water

Being a promoter of drinking distilled water, I would be remiss to leave out some data on that technology

For a comprehensive listing of distillation systems, just do a Google search using the following search words: "water distillation" Canada +home -industrial.

The top result you'll get is this one: http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/en/co/maho/wawa/wawa_003.cfm

Surprise, surprise! You'll get some truth about drinking distilled water! I'll take it, for what it's worth.

“Distilled water is safe to drink. Distillers remove minerals like calcium and magnesium from drinking water. In Canada, a temperate climate, water is a minor source of such minerals when compared to foods. If you consume a reasonably balanced diet, you do not need to take a mineral supplement when drinking distilled water.”

Here too, the resulting Google search list is extensive.

If you'd rather purchase your distilled water from a retailer, you can do a search in your municipality, and you'll surely find some distilled water retailers.

To get a list of distilled water retailers in your area, use the following Google search terms:
"distilled water" +Ottawa +retail -industrial, including the plus and minus signs,
just substitute your city's name for Ottawa, or a nearby town or city and you should get plenty of listings.

Drinking copious amounts of pure water every day is one of the best things you can do for the greatest health benefits. Drinking pure water is one of the best medicines you can take.

Chapter 12

How to Avoid Fluoride

In order to know how to avoid fluoride, one must know where to find it. In areas where the water is fluoridated, the largest amount of fluoride consumed comes from fluoride in the drinking water.

How to Avoid Fluoride from Fluoridated Water

In the home, the major part of this fluoride comes from water consumed directly from the tap; water used to dilute fruit juices, fruit drinks, dry or concentrated infant formulas, etc.; water used to cook foods such as rice, spaghetti, hot cereals, beans, soups, etc.; water used to brew coffee and tea; water used to make bread, sprouts, etc.

A home water distiller provides the most reliable way to remove fluoride from the water in the home. The water from this unit should be used for drinking and for the preparation of all foods in the home. An alternate solution is to have distilled water delivered to the home.

(A copy of a comprehensive list of localities with fluoride in the water is available from the U.S. Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, Georgia 30330.) Information as to whether a particular area is fluoridated can also be obtained by contacting the local water department. Ideally, fruit juices from concentrate and fruit drinks should be avoided and replaced with 100 pure juices with no water added. Juices from concentrate are, by and large, a cheaper and inferior substitute. Fresh fruits are the ideal alternative.

A number of beers and wines are manufactured in fluoridated areas. Since manufacturers are required to list the locations) where the bottling took place, one is able to determine whether the area is fluoridated and thus whether the wine or beer is fluoridated. Some widely-known beers which are not fluoridated include Coors, Heineken, and Rolling Rock. Some beer manufacturers list a number of bottling plants, some fluoridated, some non-fluoridated, making it virtually impossible to determine whether or not the beer is fluoridated. If you are fond of a particular beer or wine, it would be well worth your while to telephone the winery or brewery to ask about the product's fluoride content. Make sure you let them know what area of the country you live in so they can give you the accurate fluoride content of the product delivered to your area. If it turns out to be more than 0.4 parts per million fluoride, reject it.

Soft drinks should be avoided whether or not they are fluoridated, but if you are hooked on these health-menace beverages, you can use the same steps mentioned above for beers and wines to determine whether they are fluoridated.

Similarly, care should be taken to avoid food products from fluoridated areas in which water is a major constituent. In order to determine this, make sure that you read the labels of the foods you buy and reject any food which lists water as one of the first three ingredients.(1)

Distillation will kill and remove bacteria, viruses, cysts, as well as, heavy metals, radionuclides, organics, inorganics, and particulates. And, yes, it will also remove minerals which will fall under inorganic contaminants. Whether the minerals in water are beneficial or useless has been an ongoing debate. All of our minerals are derived from our food: fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, grains, nuts and dairy products. The minerals in water are so scant that in Boston, Massachusetts - USA for example, one would have to drink [excessive amounts] to obtain the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA)(2)

As much as my own research shows to be consistent with the above statements and that I agree with them, the saying "caveat emptor" : let the buyer beware, still applies. There are many factors that may affect the water quality output of any distillers and distillers must be certified as conforming with good manufacturing practices and the resulting distillate must not be contaminated by the exit materials (pipes, hose, fittings, holding tank, etc.) used to provide output and containment for such water.
