Here is the kind of statement that should appear on all our water bills in Ottawa for as long as Artificial Drinking Water Fluoridation continues in our City. “Your public water supply is fluoridated. When feeding infants under 12 months of age, liquid concentrate or powdered infant formula should be mixed with water that is fluoride-free. Consult your health care provider for more information.” In your communication with your Councillor and city officials, be sure to emphasize in your request that the warning notice be located in a “conspicuous and prominent place” on all billing statements and appear on a contrasting background and that all characters in the warning notice be in at least a 10-point font. Be polite and non confrontational, but be firm and confident. The American Dental Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that mothers feeding their babies not make up infant formula using fluoridated water. They made this recommendation only to medical professionals in November 9, 2006, and repeated the warning in December 2010. However, the statement was never made public. Need we wonder why? Breastfed babies do not need additional supplies of fluoride. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that fluoride supplements not be given to infants younger than six months of age because of the concern about fluorosis later in life due to exposure at this age group. Now our task is to convince our Councillors and the City's administration to move on this issue with all due speed to implement this recommendation. As much pressure as possible needs to be exerted on them to get this done as soon as possible. Smail mail, emails, faxes, tweets, phone calls and personal meetings with them, with facts and scientific proof in support of your recommendation. These are all essential to success in getting this done. If all else fails, legal action will have to be taken as a last resort. Don't be afraid. Be prepared and expect miracles! (thank you Nermit).
